Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative impact on our health.
So what is considered as Obese?
People are generally considered obese when their body mass index BMI is at least 20% higher than it should be. If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 25 and 29.9 you are considered overweight. If your BMI is 30 or over you are considered obese. The effects of obesity are hazardous in long run and increase the likelihood of various diseases particularly certain types of cancer, heart disease type 2, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, etc.
‘Obesity’ is the viewed as the most serious health problems faced by the world today and in fact, if obese you run the risk of inviting a long list of unwanted dreadful diseases. Hence, it is highly recommended to take preventive measures as soon as possible. It can be quite challenging to change habits. After we realize the causes of obesity, it takes a very carefully thought out set of actions in order to keep it in check.
The most basic function of body fat is self – storage of food reserves. ‘Obesity in children’ is a major issue too. With chronic malnutrition being the norm for most of human history, genetics evolved to favor fat storage. So when did body fat become problematic? The negative impacts of being overweight were not even noted in medical history until the 18th century. Later, technological advances coupled with public health measures resulted in the betterment of the quantity, quality, and variety of food.
The most common causes of obesity are:
Junk foods – Today, we follow a culture of processed food. Foods are often more refined ingredients mixed in with a bunch of chemicals. These products last long on the shelf and taste so incredibly good that we just can’t get enough. These are highly engineered foods which taste so good that we become “hooked”.
Genes – Genes may add but certainly they do not determine one’s fate. It has been studied that offspring of obese parents are much more likely at disposal to gain weight than offspring of lean parents. This does not, however, mean that losing weight is impossible. So, make exercises a part of your daily routine.
Over–eating – Reasons for obesity are myriad but one of the major ones is over-eating junk and unhealthy food items. This generally happens when a person is stressed, angry or lethargic. This can form into a routine since being obese does not make them happier either.
Media – Yes, being glued to your Television sets, computers, laptops, and indulging in leisure activities does not always promote enough active living either. It increases obesity-induced diseases. It is often seen that lousy postures, slouching and being at rest along with unhealthy eating practices gives rise to severe obesity.
Commuting – If you choose your car for regular travel, you may want to re-think again. There is a high possibility of being obese. Depending on cars rather than walking or cycling has an incredible impact on your health. Sitting for long periods of time builds up more fat in your tummy area.
Eh! Who likes the nasty muffin top? The less you bike or walk, the more you are prone to get ‘Obese’.
Medications – Why this? You may be wondering. As per recent medical researches, it has been found that many pharmaceutical drugs that we consume can trigger weight gain as a side effect. Some examples include diabetes medication, antidepressants, antipsychotics, etc. These drugs alter the function of the body and brain, making it selectively store fat instead of burning it.
Increasing Age – Age can also add to your weight. With growing age, we surely lose some muscle volume and this causes fat. This happens usually when you do not spend time exercising.
Sleep Deprivation – Yes, it is really important to catch a good 7-8 hours of sleep regularly. People who have a poor sleep routine, in addition, have a higher risk of becoming overweight. This increases your chances of getting obese due to sleep deprivation. The reduction in sleep duration has a negative impact on your health. It also develops into something more serious termed as chronic sleep deprivation.
